TRAVEL
Perugia is the capital of the Italian region, Umbria. The city and the province of the same name are roughly equal distance between Florence (North) and Rome (South). The city is built on a high hilltop and has since spread to the valleys around the area. Perugia can be reached by train, bus, plane and car.
BY PLANE
Perugia has its own international airport called San Francesco d'Assisi Airport (PEG), which is just a 15 minute drive from the city centre. There are direct flights to Perugia from 18 different airports worldwide, including 9 domestic flights. You can reach the city centre from the airport by bus, rental car, or taxi. If you're traveling from Australia, both Florence and Rome international airports are equal distance from Perugia. Perugia can then be reached by car or train from both airports.
BY CAR
The drive from Florence to Perugia and from Rome to Perugia both take approximately 2 hours. Car rental services are available at major airports and cities throughout Italy. If you plan to drive in Italy, it's advisable to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your Australian driver's license. Ensure you check these requirements and review your travel insurance needs. Watch out for ZTL Zones; many cities in Italy have Limited Traffic Zones where only residents or authorised vehicles are permitted, as driving into them will result in fines.
BY TRAIN
The main train station, Perugia Centrale (also known as Perugia Fontivegge), is situated in the valley below the city. The city centre is up on the hill and can be reached in less than 10 minutes by car or 15 minutes by bus. Below are approximate train travel times from the main nearby cities to Perugia Centrale.
